Born in 1938 in Sellersville, Pennsylvania, and raised in Fairfield, Connecticut, Joan Moment is a Northern California painter who has exhibited widely throughout the U.S. and abroad. She earned her MFA in 1970 from the University Colorado, where she studied under Roland Reiss, William T. Wiley, Joe Clower and Robert Helm. Upon graduation, she moved to Sacramento to accept a teaching position at California State University. (She retired as a Professor Emeritus in 2006.) The artist first received national recognition in 1973 when she was chosen to participate in the Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American art. In 1974, the Whitney, under the curatorial direction of Marcia Tucker, awarded her a one-person exhibition. During Moment’s 40-year career, which has included 44 solo exhibitions, her work has shifted markedly in style but has remained focused on themes of mortality and transcendence.

A recipient of three artist-in-residence awards sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation and visiting professor positions at Princeton University, Bard College and the University of North Carolina, Moment has placed works in numerous public, private and corporate collections. They include the Oakland Museum of Art, Philadelphia Art Museum, CU Art Museum ( University of Colorado), Crocker Art Museum (Sacramento), University of California Art Museum (San Diego), California State Memorial Union Collection (CSUS, Sacramento), the Richard L. Nelson Gallery and Fine Arts Collection (UC Davis), China Academy of Arts, Hangzhou, Allen Memorial Art Museum (Oberlin College), ExxonMobil (Houston, Texas), Security Pacific National Bank (Los Angeles), Hewlett Packard (Roseville, Calif.) Chase JP Morgan Bank (San Francisco), New York State Development Corp., and the Marcia Tucker Estate (Santa Barbara, Calif.).
